Each year in Gloucester the Sicilian-American community eagerly anticipates the Feast of San Giuseppe. As they do in Italian-American neighborhoods around the country, family and friends gather on March 19th to share “La Tavolata di San Giuseppe.”
The film Gloucester’s Feast of Saint Joseph ~ A Community Film Project is a celebration of family traditions, and how and why the nine-day novena and the feast are celebrated in Gloucester. Through interviews and narration, you’ll meet members of Gloucester’s Italian-American community and experience Gloucester’s unique customs and special feast foods, prepared only during the nine days leading up to and during the Feast of San Giuseppe.
To bring this project to life, many families have granted interviews, given generously of their time, and opened their homes and hearts. My most heartfelt thanks goes to Nina and Frank Groppo and their community of Family and Friends for allowing filming to take place during their Saint Joseph preparations, Novena, and Saint Joseph Feast over the past several years. Not only for agreeing to allow filming during their cherished celebration, but for their loving kindness and warm and welcoming ways.
With thanks and gratitude to Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken for her continued help and guidance.
With thanks to Ann Margaret and Francis Ferrante for their advice and offers of assistance, which will be much needed in the coming months editing.
With special thanks to Maria Cracchiolo and her parents Nina and Domenic Damico for allowing filming and the sharing of their traditional Sicilian feast desserts in their very busy Caffe Sicilia kitchen during the very hectic time of Saint Joseph preparations.
With thanks to Joe and Nanci Lee Virgilio for permitting filming during Saint Joseph roll making.
Filming for the Gloucester’s Feast of Saint Joseph Community Film Project is continuing through Saint Joseph’s Day of this year. My deepest thanks and appreciation to my community for their ongoing support of the Gloucester’s Feast of Saint joseph Community Film Project.

Joe Virgilio Makes Saint Joseph Rolls is a wonderful addition to Gloucester’s Feast of Saint Joseph Community Film Project. So many thanks to Joe for taking time from his busy work day to allow filming! Highlights include Joe sharing stories about the early days working alongside his grandfather and cousins, when the thousands of rolls needed for Saint Joseph’s Day were made by hand.
